Caravan and motorhome owners face a security problem that fixed-property homeowners rarely think about. A caravan parked on a site or at a campsite needs ventilation overnight, especially from May through September when interior temperatures climb rapidly. But leaving a window open in a vehicle with thin walls and basic locks is a risk most owners accept reluctantly rather than solve. A caravan window lock that holds the window open at a fixed, secure gap changes that calculation entirely.

Why Standard Caravan Window Stays Are Not Security Devices

Most caravans and motorhomes come with friction-operated window stays. These hold the window at a set angle against wind. They are not lockable. They provide no resistance to someone pushing the window from outside. A determined push, sometimes just a firm hand, is enough to overcome the friction and widen the gap.

Polyplastic and Seitz windows, the two most common types in UK touring caravans, use a lever mechanism that clicks into position. These levers hold the window open but do not lock it. The same applies to hopper windows on motorhomes and camper van conversions.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club’s security advice focuses on door locks, wheel clamps and alarm systems. Window security while ventilating is barely mentioned, despite the fact that an open caravan window is the easiest entry point.

What Makes LockLatch Different on a Caravan?

LockLatch® is a C304 rust-resistant stainless steel arm that holds any window or door at an adjustable gap of 9 to 17 centimetres. A locking pin drops into the barrel of the lock in any of the four holes, and the lock is lockable with a removable key.

On a caravan, this means the window opens far enough for genuine cross-ventilation on a hot night but cannot be pushed wider from outside. The key stays with the owner, not in the window mechanism.

The product fits any window or door whatever the frame is made from and whichever way it opens. Caravan windows are typically aluminium-framed, which means installation uses pop rivets. Four small holes are drilled into the frame, then secured using a rivet gun. About 15 minutes per window.

Will It Fit My Caravan?

LockLatch® works on:

  • Top-hinged caravan windows (the most common type on Bailey, Swift, Lunar and Coachman models)
  • Side-hinged windows on motorhomes and camper van conversions
  • Sliding windows on older caravans and some Hymer models
  • Caravan doors (the habitation door and any side access doors)

The adjustable range is the same regardless of window type. The U bolt allows easy positioning on the frame, and the four-hole mounting pattern adapts to different frame thicknesses. Where the window frame is thinner than a standard residential frame, the footplates still grip securely because the rivets pull tight against the material.

What About Caravan Doors?

The habitation door on most UK touring caravans is the largest opening and the most valuable one for ventilation. Leaving it open on a warm evening while cooking or watching television is normal. Leaving it open at night without security is not.

LockLatch® mounts to the door frame and the door itself, locking it at the selected gap. The same 9 to 17 centimetre range applies. This provides enough airflow to cool the interior without allowing someone to reach in and operate the internal lock.

PetLatch®, with its wider 14.5 to 23 centimetre range, suits caravan owners with dogs who need the door open far enough for the animal to pass through but still locked. The dog already uses the door as its regular route, so no training is required. PetLatch® secures that existing habit.

How Does It Handle Damp and Condensation?

Condensation is the number one maintenance issue in UK caravans. The National Caravan Council recommends continuous ventilation when a caravan is in use and partial ventilation during winter storage to prevent mould. Standard roof vents provide some airflow, but opening a window provides significantly more.

A caravan window secured with LockLatch® can be left open during storage periods without the security risk of an unlocked window. The adjustable gap allows a narrow 9 centimetre opening for storage ventilation or a wider opening for occupied use.

C304 stainless steel is rust-resistant and requires minimal maintenance. It handles the moisture, salt air and temperature variation of a touring lifestyle without degradation.

Pricing and Ordering

A typical two-berth caravan has four to six windows plus the habitation door. Securing all openings with LockLatch® costs substantially less than a caravan alarm system and addresses a different threat: the open window that an alarm cannot protect.

LockLatch® ships from distribution centres in South Africa and the UK. The UK distribution centre is in Penley, near Wrexham. Delivery across the UK typically takes two to four working days.

The product carries a lifetime guarantee. If the caravan is sold or traded in, LockLatch® can be removed and reinstalled on the next vehicle. Holes from the previous installation can be covered with rubber grommets.
